Faith is the true motivator when it comes to photographer and branding agency owner, Kristopher Anderson. The Atlanta native was always interested in.. , but could never quite pinpoint what it was until he began his journey at the illustrious Hampton University. While attending the university, he studied sports management and graduated in 2018.

Kristopher is known for being very expressive in his faith and open about his relationship with God. When speaking with him, he always made sure to give credit to the one that guided him through it all and was the one who was, even today, leading and guiding him in his decision making. 

In 2015, he founded his nonprofit organization called Awaken Future Generations. This organization caters to the younger generation in helping them become more aware of their capability to be whatever they have their heart set on being in adulthood through mentorship, scholarship, and service.

This passion for helping others is what led Kristopher to also create The UpNext Brand, LLC. This branding agency is to help give everyone the opportunity to see not only what they bring to the table, but the understanding of their potential to truly be "up next." To go more in-depth, his true intentions behind his brand are to allow people to be creative and have a space to do so. When going into business, it can be difficult trying to balance a career and still stay true to your creative self. 

It all started after Kristopher became interested in becoming a Youtube vlogger, but it winded up not working out so he decided to put his camera to use anyway. He winded up taking some of his friend's pictures one day that eventually went viral. 

This transformed into various people after asking him to take their pictures for special occasions in a more professional setting.

Originally, the UpNext Brand was originally supposed to have a podcast. Things were quickly changed when the COVID-19 pandemic began rising across the United States. With this, Kris decided to take initiative and create what is now recognized as The UpNext Magazine. Despite him not having any experience writing articles or being keen on reading & writing, Kris did not let him detour him from what he felt in his heart that he should pursue. 

September 2020 Issue of The UpNext Magazine

The origin of the UpNext Magazine was in place of Kris' original idea of beginning a podcast series that was halted by the current pandemic. Today, the magazine has grown in readers and notoriety showcasing various black creatives from industries such as fashion, media, and music. His hopes for the magazine is that it will be a platform that helps those featured and those viewing work together to get to the next level.

When asked about his favorite interview, Kris was first unable to pinpoint one. He then explained that one of his favorites, though he loves them all dearly, was the one he did with long-time friend Nigil Crawford.

What intrigued me most about his answer was not the answer itself, but the fact that they both are in the same industry and still found a way to co-exist being successful. And as FRIENDS at that! In many cases, people end up being against each other when they don't have to be. This could be from being driven apart or hidden jealously from either party if not both parties at some point in time. In the African American community, we are so quick to support each other when we have something to personally gain so that's why I found it to be so commendable. 

One of his favorite parts of the process of combining his two passions is seeing the end result of the magazine covers after envisioning them in his mind and hearing the subject's positive feedback.

Photography is an art form that many people are fond of but is not always executed properly.
Kristopher's obedience to God to redirect him into what is now his pride and joy has been a transition that is not only admirable but inspiring. 

As for his advice to those looking to do what he does or something similar, he encourages to be mindful of the connections you already have and the new ones you will make. This is because everyone may not have your best interest at heart or sometimes where God is taking you, everyone cannot go and it is not meant for them to be apart of your life for that season. Additionally, to implement financial discipline and to put God at the center of your business or brand. 

The UpNext Brand is a great resource for creatives that are looking to expand themselves and network with other people with similar mindsets. I know sometimes when starting your own brand, you want to do everything yourself, but maybe that's why you're still in the same spot that you've been in since this time last year.

There's nothing wrong with asking others more knowledgeable for help. Taking this initiative is actually more effective than doing everything yourself because it will help you grow past the perspective you have and help take some of the stress off of yourself. 

The rest will work itself out.

When asked "what's next" for both Kris and The UpNext Brand, he had much to say. "What people can look forward to seeing from me is new articles from heavy hitters, traveling, and expanding the name of the UpNext Studio."

Success Spotlight: Quentin Davis

 Success Spotlight: Quentin Davis - Donte Dinero 

When you think of an entrepreneur, the first picture that comes to your mind may or may not be an African American male, especially a college student. 

This is where I swoop in and introduce you to a different perspective. 

Many people know the brand, but not the man behind it all.

Quentin Davis, the owner of clothing brand Donte Dinero, has made his brand a household name in his at-home community of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Along with his school community which is the illustrious Hampton University where he is currently a junior pursuing a degree in Business Management. 

Though he had various people in his family that attended Hampton, he initially didn't want to go to college which can be surprising considering that usually when a child has a parent or family member that is legacy, they will go to the school where the legacy is.  His parents wanted him to be in a better environment to be able to grow and use his knowledge so that is where things began prior to starting his business. 

The Birth of Donte Dinero

One day, Quentin was asked by a friend of his why he wouldn't turn his likes into profit considering his larger social media following from incorporating fashion into his feed and people always questioning what he was wearing. Though the concept had never crossed his mind before, he needed a way to make some money so he was open to the concept.  What helped to seal the deal was when he was asked to hang out with another friend, he had to decline the offer because of him not having money. 

He decided soon after to write down everything and make it plain while at a track meet for a family member within a 2-hour time span. Every detail and specification came to him at this time which made things easier to plan. The only part that was left was the actual execution. 

The name was what took longer than the actual coordination of the business. It originates from Quentin's middle name being Donte. The word Donte in Spanish means "endure". Since he also initially wanted the name of his business to have something to do with money, he decided to use the word "Dinero" which means wealth in Spanish. As a result, the name of the brand itself means to Endure Wealth. 

Running a business can be stressful, but Quentin is sure to balance both his academic life and business life. He also has learned to manifest more of the things that come into his life and write about the things that stress him out which in-turn has produced growth in different areas of his life. 

The brand specializes in streetwear clothing for both men and women such as t-shirts, shorts, accessories, and more!

When asked who were his fashion influences, he said that he didn't specifically have any. However, he did mention that he admired business owners Milano DeRouge & Gsuwoo because of the way both

brands operate and cater to the concept of being both luxury and streetwear. 

Being a business owner hasn't always been great. Though rewarding over time, it can be challenging sometimes having to do everything yourself when others aren't available to help you. An example of this was when Quentin talked more in-depth about his experience one summer trying to get his business off the ground. He described this particular summer as the "worst summer ever". This was because he decided to do a photoshoot for his business in New York. Upon arrival, things did not go as planned... at all. From wasting time and money to being kicked out of the hotel he was staying at with friends, everything was out of alignment. While he still may have gotten nice shots to use for his business, they weren't 100% what he wanted but he had to take it for what it was for the sake of his business because it was too late at that point. 

After contemplating to keep his business or let it go, he decided to post the shots anyway which had better views than what he had anticipated. 

This taught him to pace himself because the ideas he had were so elaborate, but when starting off sometimes things can't always start in that way. Giving yourself room to mess up and grow is essential when having a business because as the years go along, you do not want to hold regret or not live enough in the present to actually experience your different milestones because you'd be always going for the next thing. 

What I personally learned in my experience with speaking to Quentin is that in many situations, it truly is me vs. me. YOU are the only one that stands in between you and what you truly want for yourself. Yes, there will be naysayers but people will talk about you whether you are doing good or bad so it's vital in your journey of success to have laser-focus on what you want for yourself. 

Quentin's advice to anyone looking to pursue a business venture or even just generally thinking about doing something potentially out of their comfort zone or something new is:

#1) Pace Yourself - Passion can make you want to rush through things, but do NOT rush your process. Don't overwhelm yourself, especially if you are in school. 

#2) Always Promote Yourself - You never know where a like, retweet, or share can take your business so make sure that people are doing these things for you (they are FREE!)

#3) Stay Consistent - Everybody struggles with this, but it will get your brand to touch places you've never been. 

When asked what to expect next from himself and his brand, Quentin's response was one of joy and much anticipation. He spoke briefly about more collaborations with people in the industry and the true expansion of his business. September's New Music: #LetsTalk About It

 

I know, I know. “Where you been girl?” “Where are the blog posts?” “Do you even still have a blog?” I’ve been all over and back around again but I am happy to be sharing with you all today some content. I apologize for the lack of content, I do have a life haha! I also have a mini-business where I do marketing consulting & graphic design.

Yes, I’m plugging myself! But I know you came here for the music so let’s go ahead and jump right in! 

The first piece of music I will be reviewing is the Do It Remix by Chloe x Halle featuring the City Girls, Mulatto, & Doja Cat. At first, I was hesitant about the song because I didn’t know how everyone’s voices would sound on the track but I was excited because I thought “maybe this was just what the track needed.” I was pleasantly surprised by Doja Cat’s energy on the track and the extra beats and ad-libs they added to the background really made it smooth. One of my favorite verses of the song was from Mulatto when she said “classy like Chloe and Halle, nasty like Megan” because I feel like all of us as women are a mix of both with different ratios. After listening to the song, I was fairly please. It gave me the same hypeness as the original song and left me feeling like that chick! I’m looking forward to seeing more from the powerful sister duo, they are truly a force to be reckoned with.

Next, I’ll be reviewing SZA’s newest single called “Hit Different” featuring Ty Dolla $ign.  Now me personally, I loveeeeeee me some Ty from his early days! So whenever he puts something out, I’m already hype. I’ve also been a fan of SZA for a long time, since her first album “Z”. I wasn’t too fond of her music as she started to gain a bigger following because I was used to a certain musical style by her and it felt like she was sort of switching up. Nonetheless, I still think she’s a great singer. As for the song itself, I’m not gone lie... I listened to the song twice and felt the same way. I really wasn’t feeling it like that. It actually upset me because I saw clips from the music video and set higher expectations but when hearing the entire song, it sounded like some of her other songs. However, I do still love the concept of the music video. The cinematography and wardrobe of it all was very nice and showed SZA in a beautiful light. The vibes it gave off was also very chill yet aesthetically pleasing. 

“Down” by G-Eazy featuring Mulatto was definitely a song that surprised me. Though I like Mulatto’s tone when rapping I think sometimes her rap style just doesn’t do it for me. Like there are some female rappers that I’d choose over her but on THIS song, she snapped. The theme of the music video was supposed to be some sort of prostitution with Mulatto starring as the Madame and G-Eazy as the prostitute which I found intriguing considering normally it’s the other way around. The wardrobe and decorum of the music video were very well put together. On top of that, they featured Flo Milli, Santana, and in the music video towards the end. What a great way to close out a music video AND they all looked good. The song is very catchy and I’m sure it’ll be a song that I’ll be hearing a lot more soon. 

Last but certainly not least, Big Sean’s Detroit2 Album. One of the things I was most excited about with this album was the features. I thought it was so honorable that Big Sean decided to really put the city on by having a cypher of all Detroit rappers including Eminem, Tee Grizzley, Sada Baby, Kash Doll, Cash Kidd, 42 Dugg, Boldy James, Royce 5’9, Payroll Giovanni & Drego which was absolutely amazing if I do say so myself. Everybody’s separate parts on the track were on point and the beat... it was just beautiful. Some other songs I enjoyed most on the album was Deep Reverence (RIP Nipsey!), Everything That’s Missing feat. Dwele and Guard Your Heart feat. Anderson .Paak, Earlly Mac, and Wale. I’m a HUGE Anderson .Paak along with Wale so to have them on a track together for me was everything. The stories in between from Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu & Dave Chapelle all meant a lot to me because to hear people talk highly of their experience with your hometown really makes you feel proud. It was a great touch as this album was in a way, a dedication to the city of Detroit hence the album title.  

I loved the fact that there was so much vulnerability throughout the album as far as his feelings towards certain things and the vibe just felt different and sincere. I saw some people complaining on social media as far as Big Sean going “soft”, but personally seeing this side of him creatively is refreshing. When someone grows, you should give them room to grow. The album overall was great, I’ve already been learning the words and I hope you do too.

I had the pleasure of interviewing one of my personal Youtube favorites. I have been watching this girl since my freshman year of high school and I am now creeping upon my sophomore year of college. This woman is Alice Wheeler, or more commonly known as Coffee Cream Girl. She has made a name for herself in both the Youtube game and now in the world of graphic design. She initially started her Youtube while she was attending the illustrious, Langston University. This is where I was introduced to her with her college advice videos on topics such as HBCU lifestyle, scholarships, and makeup tutorials. 

Alice started off in school as a track athlete pursuing a college career in Biology. While she enjoyed what she was in pursuit of, something was still missing. Though she had been doing Youtube for an extended period time, she truly began to love it when she diversified her content. Youtube was her free space to be openly expressive, before the monetization of course. 

"Something about being behind the camera made me feel comfortable." She stated when referring to her experience with Youtube.

Alice was shortly after met with the struggles of running a "company".  This was known as the Youtube series she was apart of while in college titled, Living At Langston. With having to suddenly face copyright infringement charges from her school-based off using the logo, color, and other things linked back to the school, this really took the fun out of something that was intended to just highlight events and things going on at her university. It went from simple videos to more in-depth productions and merchandise. Following this, she began to find herself becoming somewhat detached from her college experience after her memories and dedication to the series that she loved were being altered beyond her control. Alice later left Langston University to focus more on herself and her mental health after things became hectic at school.

However, she did not let any of this stop her. Though unaware of where her journey would lead her next, she still had her own Youtube channel which at the time had three to four thousand subscribers. 

When asked about her favorite thing about being a Youtuber, she said that it was "good being recognized for just doing what you do." Many people don't always think about all the time that a Youtube channel truly takes. Not to mention the money you have to spend on equipment and software. You always want to advance yourself and in any industry, it can become competitive, but making yourself stand out on your own is what will be helpful.

"Dont base yourself too much on what other people achieved." Alice advises for anyone looking to become a Youtuber or enter into the field of graphic design. 

This is to say that as you watch other people's success in their prospective career, detach yourself from trying to replicate what they do. Create your OWN lane and don't let others box you into a category that you do not want to be in. Versatility is going to be your best friend when it comes to growing your brand-- whether it be an actual business or your personal brand.  She also emphasized being authentic with your content. 

The Birth of Coffee Shop GFX

Though things seemed to be going beautifully on the outside, internally there was a strong change taking place in Alice's life. After her issues with Living At Langston, she found herself becoming detached from her academics which later resulted in her leaving Langston. 

Following this, she eventually got a job at a hair salon which was to maintain the salon. One day, she noticed the owner was in need of a logo. Alice offered to help make the logo which was the start of her taking graphic design more seriously. She also gave credit to friend and "big brother", Paul Pugh, (@theepaulpugh) who is an experienced graphic designer for helping her more with her graphic design skills. 

Coffee Shop GFX, LLC. has been around for over a year now and has a collective social media following of close to 4,000. The company has become Alice's true pride & joy, and she is growing in clientele daily. Alice hopes to have her business continually grow and eventually go back to school to become certified in Adobe Software to make this her full-time career. 

Transitioning from a college influencer to a graphic designer can be challenging, especially when life throws you curves but just remember that it IS possible. Sometimes your true gift can be something you least expect.

Tory Lanez’s “New Toronto 3” { Album Review }

If Tory Lanez hasn't popped up on your timeline at least once during this quarantine, you're following the wrong people!

Since we've been put in quarantine, and in some states curfew, Tory decided to take it upon himself to give out free entertainment. He goes live on his Instagram account every on a weekly basis that has grown in popularity. It's just him and his team vibing to music, letting girls twerk, and just being genuinely goofy. I feel as though it's giving him an advantage over other artists because not only is he keeping his followers engaged during this downtime from their regular activities. It started off kinda slow but exponentially grew quickly to the point where Instagram wouldn't allow him to go live because it was said to have been violating their community guidelines.
When I've tuned into it myself, I've never been disappointed or seen a dull moment. Having his celebrity friends like Megan Thee Stallion, Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown and Drake stop by to show love is what really makes it so interesting to see. Just people being people. Sadly, Tory announced on his Instagram recently that Quarantine Radio would be taking a temporary break until April 30th due to the guidelines of Instagram and it will later be determined on whether the fate of the live streams is headed.

In the meantime, many people have screen recorded his previous live streams and they are currently posted on Youtube!

"A lot of things were just turning me coldhearted, and I used that as the fuel to put in the project." Tory told Apple Music when asked more about his new mixtape.

The mixtape/album consists of 16 songs (including the hit single Broke In A Minute), and I know it seems like a lot but none of the songs on the album are excessively long. The overall time of the album is 44 minutes-- not even an hour. In comparison to his previous album, Chixtape 5, this album consists of more rap songs rather than R&B. So, if you were expecting some chill 90s vibes again, this is not that.

This project is also cause for celebration since it is Tory's final project since being released from the contract he had with Interscope Records!

I'm going to let you listen to the tracks yourself and decide what you think, but here are my Top Five songs from the project.

Penthouse Red
What gravitated me to this song is the vibe of it all. The background music of this track is so simple yet really brings the song to life and does just enough for you to nod your head to. This is one of the few songs on this project that Tory is singing on for the full song. This song is for when you have that special person of yours in mind. "Hennessey to red and white wine vibes" are some of the many verses that stood out to me.
Letter To The City 2
Every time I listen to this song, it makes me feel motivated. Tory really went in-depth with this song and shared his inner thoughts & emotions. This song really took me back to some of his older music. The visuals for this song are so calming and the song aligns perfectly.
Accidents Happen
I had never heard of Lil Tjay before, but after this song, I'm searching for more songs by him. He bodied his verses on this song and made to be good a pairing on this song. I honestly still don't know if I like Tory rapping or singing better, but this song definitely gave me something to contemplate about. The visuals for this song are also interesting showing large amounts of money being spread out and being put through a counting machine.
Do The Most
This song really reminds me of the way I felt when I listened to Tory's song... from his previous project Chixtape 5 considering that this song gave me nothing but turn up & party vibes This also only one of the few songs from the project that has an actual music video. I enjoyed the music video because it just gave club vibes and made me want to go out, haha!
MSG 4 GOD'S CHILDREN
This is a heartfelt song that is honestly my favorite from the whole project because he's trying to bring to shine a light on his faith. Throughout the song, he is talking about finding God for yourself and not just taking his word for it-- actually seeing for yourself! Additionally, he talks about going to God in his time of need and being a part of the army of God. It's a beautiful song that shows him being vulnerable and authentic to his truth.

Overall, I'm glad Tory released more music. Especially with everything going on around us, now is a perfect time to have some new songs to listen to. You can find the mixtape on all music platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal.

Is Black Love Dying?

In the past ten years, the amount of interracial couples in the U.S. has tremendously increased. While this may be good in some senses, it still poses the question of where this leaves same-race couples. More specifically African American couples. 

Many people often criticize black women for dating outside their race, but black men never seem to get quite the same criticism. In fact, many black men are praised when they date races other than African American. Being fairer-skinned with black women's bodily features seems to be the going trend nowadays.

Though black women have slowly stepped on the interracial dating trend, they are still found to be less progressive than black men. However, if the men the same race as them are all dating outside their race... where does that leave black women?




There's also the concept of black women being the leading amount of women attaining college degrees and growing in the business world whereas black men have had more stagnant or decreasing numbers. There could be some circumstances of intimidation or just not wanting to feel as though your woman is the ultimate breadwinner (a different conversation for a different time),  but these are ideals that are not too far fetched. Black women are also known to be more "aggressive" or less tolerable of things that they find to be Many men don't seem to like this or find it insensitive which is some of the reason they date outside their race. For others, it could be wanting to try something new or just the luck of the draw.

As mentioned before, the fact that black men date Caucasian women that have the features that black women have such as bigger lips or a more curvaceous figure. My response to that is that there is nothing like the original so no matter how much you try to dress it up, cover it up-- it's still not authentic. It is discouraging as a black woman when you see women copying the things that you do and posing it as "better" or when they are more readily accepted by society than what the originators are. That's why it's important to just remember who you are & your true beauty because will society will make you feel bad for how you look whether intentionally or not.

The answer to the ever so concerning the question "is black love dying?" is no. I say no because if it's love that involves a man or woman of color, it is black love. May the love of same-race relationships, the race being African American, be decreasing? Of course, but we shouldn't make others feel bad for who they decide to be with. You never know what someone's previous relationship history is or what they've had to go through to actually be with someone who appreciates them the way that person does.

At the end of the day, happiness is what should be at the forefront.

I mean hey, just look at Lauren and Cameron from the new hit Netflix series, Love Is Blind.  They met and connected with each other without actually seeing each other. Then, by the time they did, it didn't really matter because they had already made a deeper connection. The looks were just a bonus.

First Date Do's & Dont's

While bringing in the New Year, one of your goals might have been to get more adventurous and start dating. Or maybe it was even to get into a new relationship. Both of these are great goals to have, but sometimes we can miss one of the most essential parts when meeting a new love interest... the first date!

#1 Do.... Prepare yourself for the date
When going on a date with someone, there's always this unwritten checklist that we go through.
Hair, check.
Outfit, check.
Perfume or Cologne, check.
Breath, triple check! (at least for some people, lol)
All of these are things that we want to ensure are situated before even stepping out the door. As good as you look on the outside is how you should feel on the inside so always make sure that dating is something you actually want to do. Even if you're just going out with someone in a friendly manner, don't make people regret going out with you by the end of the night.
Don't...Overthink it
Nobody likes people that do too much so always do just enough. For those that may not understand what "just enough is", allow me to break it down. Be kind but don't be nice to the point where it doesn't seem authentic. You could wind up saying something you didn't even mean to say if you're not careful! Being yourself is the best way to be on the first date. Be YOU! It's the easiest way to be.

#2 Do... Be involved in the conversation
Nonverbal communication such as eye contact and head nodding will help affirm your date that you are listening to them attentively. If you don't understand something they're saying, there's nothing wrong with asking. If the conversation gets dry, try to think of things that are happening around you like if someone at the table next to you says something interesting or a current event that the person would know about in areas such as music or sports.
Don't... Talk too much
If you don't let the other person get out their thoughts then they will feel like you are not a good listener. There's nothing wrong with responding to what the person says to you, but do not overtalk them and let them finish what they are saying completely before interjecting. Being the proper balance of listening and talking will show this person you have a good background in communication with others.

#3 Do... Be somewhat assertive
It's always good to go into a situation knowing what you want and what your motives are. Let the person know that you're interested in pursuing them or if you enjoy the date, that you want to go out again. Showing some sort of self-awareness or strength can really help in some cases with going on a date. It's because confidence many times is more attractive than intimidating & depending on what you say or do, assertiveness can be put under the belt of confidence.
Don't... Be overbearing
This goes back to Step #2 as far as not doing too much. Let the person know what your intentions and goals are without making them feel like they have no other option, but to say yes to you because you're being intimidating. Respect what they say and their responses. Listening goes a long way, everyone appreciates feeling heard so what do you have to lose?

#4 Do... Learn from your past experiences
Sometimes things that happen to us in previous relationships can make us feel discouraged when wanting to try something new. However, you can't let a bad relationship stop you from getting into another one that could be far more happier and healthier for you. Anything that you did wrong in the previous relationship, learn & take responsibility for it...then move on.
Don't.... Take out your past experiences on others
The new person you're dating doesn't need to hear a 30-minute long rant about how your ex/baby-daddy cheated on you nor does the new person that you're dating need to hear that you crazy ex-girl keeps blowing up your phone on the hour because she wants you back. Let the negativities of your past relationship go. Whatever happened was a lesson and take the lessons you've learned onward. The new person your with should be learning the improved version of you, not the old one that was drained and stressed all the time.

#5 Do...Remember your personal boundaries
If you don't want someone touching you regardless of how intimidating they are, SAY THAT! I can't tell you how many people have told how they felt uncomfortable on a date but didn't say anything. People only do things that make you upset or uneasy if you allow them.  Being vocal about what you don't like in the beginning will help the person understand you better & will help you test if they actually listen to you.
Don't...Be too uptight
Setting boundaries is a good thing to do early when starting a new relationship to ensure you and the person you are dating are on the same page. You still have a life though!! Let this person get you out of your comfort zone justtttt enough to try something new.  It may be a new type of food, a lounge you've never been too or maybe even an event that you've never even heard of-- any of these things could open you up to new experiences with a new person. Who knows, this one choice could become a tradition for both of you.

If you don't do anything else, at least take one of these tips and use them in your dating life. If they work, thank me later! 😉

Airplane Travel Tips: Beginner Friendly

Was one of your goals for 2020 to travel more? Because... me too!
I remember when I flew on an airplane for the first time, it was honestly so nerve-wracking, but thank God my mom was there with me to comfort me. What about if you're not with someone though? People will always let you down, especially when it comes to money so don't wait on others if you don't have to. Go after what YOU want to do-- Make 2020 your year! Now is the perfect time to start budgeting and planning where you've always wanted to go. I also recommend downloading the mobile app, Hopper. This app provides you with various flights that are less expensive in comparison to if you booked through a mainstream booking service or through the airline itself. They also show you hotel deals where you're thinking of traveling too and they allow you to track the pricing of said flight to where they let you know when the pricing is fluctuating.  Booking a flight in advance is also my recommendation to save the most money & to ensure everything is the way you want it and you can have time to change things if need be.

Now here are some tips for when you are actually traveling...

1. Pack Less Than What You Think
Many Airlines do charge per bag (some with the price going up for each one) so to avoid spending more money than what you have to, strongly go over how many items you need with you. Sometimes it's just as simple as you reworking an outfit to avoid bring a whole other clothing item. Try using the "rolling" method when packing your items. This method can be found on Google with a simple search or on Youtube in a tutorial. It's actually quite simple and gets faster as you gain more experience with it.

2. Stay Clean
Nothing is ever truly "clean" when it comes to things being used publically, but specifically at the airport-- whew! There are people from everywhere and anywhere going in and out of the airport & on and off the plane. Airlines don't normally have the time to disinfect every plane because they are on time crunches and have to get their customers to their destination. Packing cleansing wipes with you to wipe down an area will really increase your chances of not getting sick when traveling.

3. Water is an Essential
I know this may seem self-explanatory, but please drink water before you fly. As you go up into the air, the air pressure within the cabin can become very strong and can cause headaches or even sore throat. It's also caused due to there being less humidity as you go higher in the air. Drinking the water that airplanes offer also isn't the best idea because their piping isn't always cleaned as what it should be which can make the water harmful to drink. Bottled water is definitely safer, but buying coffee or tea isn't best to avoid having it being made with harmful water.

4. Pay Attention to Timing
As you are navigating through the airport, it can be easy to lose track of time. I recommend using a timer when you stop at certain places in the airport such as boutiques or restaurants. Missing your flight is not a good feeling and can be very expensive. Additionally, going to your gate earlier than needed is good because you won't have to be rushing through the airport, you will already be in the area you need to be in to board your flight.

5. RELAX 
Once you've made it through the security check and baggage claim, half the battle is already done. All you have to do is wait at your assigned gate and board the plane. So download one of your favorite movies or that Netflix show you've been binge-watching is ideal. Planes normally do offer wifi, but because you are in a condensed space with various people on one Wifi source, it could be a slower connection. Before you know it, you'll be at your destination and ready to have an amazing time.

Going into this new year and decade, we all could use a little motivation, right? What about just some positive vibes? I know I did on the night of December 31st. That's what inspired me to make this week's post centered around music. Music is something that connects so many people & can highly affect your mood in various circumstances. Slowly but Surely: College Life Update

Where do I even begin to explain my college experience thus far? This has literally been some of the most teaching and memorable last couple of months of my life. To the people that I've met thus far that have been so beneficial to my growth and amplifying my college experience in a positive way, I cannot thank you enough. Having good people around you will truly make or break your college experience and I've learned in some of the hardest ways.

I won't say everything that's happened in depth because not everything that's happened only involved me and I know some people may not want their business out there. I've broken down the different aspects of my life in college into categories which I hope will help you be able to better follow along and get a gist of what things have been like through my eyes.

So sit back, relax, and get this tea!

HBCU Life was pretty much everything I expected it to be after doing my research. I made sure to know about housing, the food, staff, and even the party life. It definitely makes a difference when you network beforehand. However, there's nothing like truly experiencing it for yourself.

Academics
My grades honestly haven't been that bad. I feel like they could've been better in comparison to how I'm used to them being but we're not entirely off track. None of my classes were terribly hard which was good. However, every now & then I'd get an assignment from what seems like the devil himself! (Thank God for guidance and clarity, am I right?) All I can really do is just hope for the best because if I'm being honest, any class that doesn't involve writing is a struggle for me. Me and math ain't never got along & I don't even wanna look at another science-related formula in my life if I can help it. Much of the curriculum in my journalism classes was review for me because of my previous journalistic teachings which made the material easier. I just wasn't used to everything being so electronic. For some classes, it was good. For others, it honestly wasn't even necessary.

Party Life
Before you ask, yes they are lit. However, I didn't realize how repetitive parties could get, but I think it honestly was just the hype of it all for me. Same vibes, same music-- it just gets old after a

while. I just wanted to be out because I didn't have so many obligations or responsibilities. I will say that I had some of the best times I could have at these parties. As things slowed down and my workload got heavier, I didn't necessarily mind going out, but I definitely thought about it more before saying "yes" or "no". I also learned the importance of leaving with the same people you come with at a party after being left about a good three times or so.

Of course, I made it back safely or I wouldn't be typing this all out to you, but just communicate with those who you go out with. Also, make sure you have a good amount of money in your account just in case you have to buy the Lyft yourself :)
Drink responsibly and smoke responsibly if you decide to & make sure if it's new for you, you don't do too much because you don't know what your limits are just yet.


Relationships
I've encountered so many different types of people, went through lots of changes in my personal relationships and seen so many crazy things. The people that I started NSO (New Student Orientation) week with are still around, but not as heavily as before. I realized that it’s not always about who you start with, it’s about who you finish with.  I have more acquaintances than friends and it’s honestly kinda scary. It really wavered my trust for a little while until I realized that I’m literally with all strangers now. None of these people actually know me for real or at least not the way my family or close friends back home do. Everything is fresh and new. However, I also didn't realize how when you're in a whole new environment how much you grow & sometimes outgrow people because you all are no longer on the same path together. Saddening, but true. It's the people you least expect that you lose a connection with.

{Sidebar} Can I just say real quick how much I LOVE my HerCampus family? I joined over the summer and even though I wasn’t an active member at that point, just being in the group chat and feeling included really helped me feel valued. What they stand for as far as women’s empowerment and the art of the creative mind is really something I admire.

The Day to Day
As far as Hampton itself, I really do enjoy the school. Constantly being surrounded by young adults of color trying to push towards success is not only motivating but liberating as well. Along with having the majority of the people I see whether its a custodian or all the way up to our president, they're all people of color. It's not that we don't have other races around, but being the majority for once in my life in school has been so eye-opening for me. It helped me to be reminded that it's not always about fitting in with others, it's about creating your own thing because chances are there are others that aren't fitting in too. It’s also true what they say about being broke (even though half the time it don’t be really being broke, it just be acting broke to avoid spending money you don’t have to) My money goes almost as fast as my snacks do. I try my best to combat stress by seeking God daily and not spreading myself thin with my schedule.

Messiness
I'm not going to spend too much time on the negative experiences I've had while in college because I've learned from them and grown. However,  I would like to be realistic about the realities of college. What I've learned the hard way is that everyone is not your friend. You got people so insecure about themselves, they talk down on others. Then, you got people on the other hand with half they head filled with so much air they oughta be a hot air balloon. There are so many conversations that people have behind closed doors that never reach the people it should address & even though we're all still trying to figure things out-- what happened to the human decency? What do you actually gain from being around someone you don't like? The answer is simple and I'm sure you can already guess what it is :) All the extra is so unnecessary. That's why I plan on leaving all the mess in 2019.

Boo'd Up Season

Now that the weather is getting cooler, it's definitely time to get yourself a boo or significant other! For some people, it's easy! For others, it's the hardest task ever. That’s why I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be. A lot of times when you’re with someone you like, they are just as nervous as you are if not more. The following tips I have are ones that can not only help you but can be applied in situations that don't always include personal relationships.

The Pursuit

I know speaking to people isn't easy for everyone, especially when they may be shy or socially awkward, but it can be done with just a little bit of effort. It takes one going past the initial introduction to really make someone interested. Whether it's asking them about tasks they've completed throughout the day or bringing up topics that can be discussed between the two of you. Learn about them without making it such a uniform conversation. After you feel as though you've learned enough about them, move into putting what you've learned to the test.

You can do this by confirming the information you know about them with them. Ask them questions that show them that you were listening when they told you things.

Do all these things without trying to be invasive or overbearing. You don't want that person to feel like you're being extra, but still, make them aware of the fact that you're feeling them.

Make them want to look forward to being around you and do your best to make every interaction positive, even if it's short.

Sticking Around
After you feel like you all are close enough, still continue pursuing them. Time one of the biggest contributing factors when it comes to someone evaluating your relationship with them. Not just the time spent together, but what's actually happening in that time. You should be able to learn something new every time you're with them, never stop learning. Also, continue to keep things exciting and interesting. Avoid hum-drum conversations with them to ensure they will not eventually become bored with you. Express to the person that you want to keep talking to them and make the best of every interaction. No, you all won't have a great interaction every time, but that's okay but its not intended to be perfect.

If you feel the person is starting to drift away or become too distant, address it. Addressing it will ensure that the person is at least aware of the fact that this isn't just a seasonal thing. Or even if it was a seasonal thing, you both are on the same page.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are the one that is becoming uninterested, do your best to...

1. Put yourself in the other person's shoes
2. Be understanding of the potential attachment, if any, that either of you could have had

You want this person to understand that you are wanting to move on in the least dramatic way possible. No bad blood, no animosity. There may be tension after it initially happens, but if it's a situation where you both could be friends why not?

Or...

If you're feeling like you really would like to be with this person, but you don't know how to go about keeping them around, address this as well. Timing is everything so if you feel deep down that it's not the right time, don't ask them. It takes a bond to mature first on its own before both parties understand its true place value. Don't rush into something that could be meant to be just because you want to do things in your own timing.

Since it’s now no longer sunny all day or beaming hot, it’s fewer activities for you to enjoy with your boo but don’t let that discourage either of you from hanging out. Especially when there are more things to do than just Netflix & Chill. Doing research on events in your area is very essential to what’s going on. Sometimes when we don’t hear about things, we think nothing is going on which isn’t always the case. Find different festivals, upcoming concerts, or even... in your area.

Pro-Tip: Surprise your significant other by going to the event without telling them and make them guess the entire way there just to see where their mind is.

If research doesn’t help or you don’t have too much money right now, try anything of the things listed below:

For those cold nights where it's just you two together, you could also try to play music. Sometimes it’s not even about getting in the mood, it’s about having that vibe with another person. Behind the Camera: Actor's Edition

I had the pleasure of interviewing the amazing Kiah Clingman. The Ohio native had her start with acting when she would work on different short films and videos with her friends from college. All of which were great starts to her now even more blossoming career. She also comes from a creative background because her father, James Clingman, is an author of various economic books and black empowerment books. Her resume includes working with production companies such as DamnWriteOriginals and the Cincinnati Black Theatre. As well as, co-starring in the hit series Black Lightning and the film Undercover Brother 2. She graduated from Howard University in 2015 with her degree in both Theater and History.

"Acting is the hardest but most rewarding job to do." She stated when referring to the will and resilience needed in an industry that is very critical, and sometimes even rejecting various things you may want to bring to the table or ideals you may have.

At one point, it was even hard for her to get bookings because of her natural hair. Sometimes your appearance, especially in the entertainment industry, can be a make or break deal for your next job offer. Kiah explained how she had to learn to be "okay with herself" and understand that it is not always personal in brands that have a certain look they're trying to uphold. Additionally, rooting for others when you don't get the part. It can be very discouraging, especially in an industry that is so competitive, when you don't get a role that you feel like was made for you.

With God being the head of her life, not only does she go to Him in prayer for a lot of her decision making, but she also prides herself on having your intentions align with your overall perspective in life. One role in a major movie she turned down because the role included her going up to another male character and wearing minimal clothing-- as if to be one of his "women". Turning this down said a lot to me about her character and her as a woman because she didn't wanna be presented in a way that would "downplay" her.

When asked about what advice she would give to someone who is looking to break into the industry, she exclaimed about one's perception. One's perception of their circumstances is what can affect their decisions & how they carry themselves on a daily basis.

Behind the Camera, Kiah still struggles with family issues like the next person. Along with balancing all of the different hats that she wears daily. Nonetheless, she does it gracefully with the way she chooses to live her life. Releasing positive energy out onto others is one way she does this along with seeking counseling. Yes, as we all know it can be scary venting to someone that you don't know about topics that you may not feel comfortable talking about. However, speaking to someone that has no previous background about you helps them to be objective and unbiased to ways they can advise you to go about different circumstances. This is something that she suggested for those wanting to get into the industry for clarity.

What's coming next from Kiah? Some of the projects she's working on she couldn't disclose all of the information due to The project she just recently finished, Undercover Brother 2, will be on Netflix in November. Also, she's producing two different short films that should have release dates on the horizon.
